Darwin Raglan Caspian Ahab Poseidon Nicodemus Watterson III, better known simply as Darwin Watterson, is the deuteragonist of the animated series The Amazing World of Gumball and the titular main protagonist of its spin-off mini-series Darwin's Yearbook.
He is Gumball's best friend and adoptive younger brother, the son of Nicole and Richard, and the older brother of Anais. He is also the love interest-turned-boyfriend of Carrie Krueger. Darwin was the Watterson's family pet until he grew legs and became their son. He attends Elmore Jr. High as a student in Ms. Simian's class.
Although Darwin is one of the series' main characters, he appears as an antagonist in some episodes.
He is voiced by Jake Pratt in the early reel, and by Kwesi Boakye, Terrell Ransom Jr., Donielle T. Hansley Jr., and Christian J. Simon consecutively in the main series.
Appearance[]
Darwin is a relatively short, humanoid orange goldfish. The majority of his body is essentially his fish-shaped head in the absence of a torso, from which his stubby arms and legs protrude, and he has small fin on its back. He also has no fingers or toes. The interior of Darwin's mouth is red while his tongue is pink, and he wears no clothing apart from green and white sneakers.
Personality[]
Darwin is generally a positive, optimistic person who wants others to be happy too. He is selfless and sympathetic toward, and helps people around Elmore when they're sad or need support, especially his peers. Darwin can also be naive and idealistic, believing the best in people and the world, even when he probably shouldn't. Still, he is usually the moral compass of the series.
As Gumball's "sidekick," Darwin struggles with independence and making his own decisions. He usually follows Gumball's lead while viewing him as more confident and decisive, sometimes reluctantly joining his questionable plans; Darwin often criticizes Gumball when he believes he takes something too far. Despite this, Darwin can be mischievous by his own volition and is fun-loving, enjoying things like pranks, video games, and junk food.
Darwin is not perfect, and sometimes he can become angry when pushed too far. Like most of the other characters, he has moments of absurdity that contradict his normally good nature, sometimes leading to antagonistic and eccentric behavior.
Antagonistic Roles[]
"The Words"[]
In "The Words," Darwin starts out on the school bus unable to tell Sussie to stop being annoying and loud due to his shyness. When Gumball easily solves the problem by simply asking her politely, Darwin is amazed. After Jamie cuts in front of Darwin in the lunch line and he can't speak up, Darwin gets frustrated with himself. Gumball offers to help him be more direct with people about the issues he has with them. First, Darwin successfully confronts Leslie about his gripe about Leslie misusing words, though he initially struggles to express himself. Darwin later becomes excited about his new assertiveness after he yells at Tobias pulling the same pose in every photo. Eventually, he sings in the hallway about the other students while celebrating how he can speak his mind, but he goes too far, insulting several classmates in the process and making Banana Joe and Masami cry. Darwin becomes increasingly aggressive, arguing with Teri about her hypochondria and even licking her hand to spite her, which gets him and Gumball sent to Mr. Small's office. In class, Darwin becomes overwhelmed by everyone's annoying habits and explodes, ruthlessly insulting almost everyone in the class like a bully.
Gumball is concerned about Darwin and wants to stop him, so the two brothers have a "Street Fighter-style" insult battle where Darwin repeatedly tells Gumball he has a "big head." Gumball eventually wins by cruelly saying Darwin is just a pet who grew legs, not his real brother.
Finding Darwin crying, Gumball apologizes and takes back what he said, insisting that he didn't mean it. As a result of Gumball's harsh words, Darwin realizes that being honest doesn't mean being hurtful, and the brothers reconcile with a hug. Darwin still maintains Gumball has a big head, which Gumball shrugs off.
"The Safety"[]
Darwin watches a scary, safety precautionary video about "Little Teddy" at school and goes insane, and becomes extremely overprotective of Gumball. He childproofs their house, removes swear words from the show, replaces normal food with pure nutrients, and criticizes cartoons for promoting dangerous activities. As Darwin's obsession grows, he brainwashes the family (who pretend to comply while secretly resisting) and tries to make all of Elmore "safe." He establishes a dictatorial headquarters at town hall with guards and security systems, becoming the ruler of Elmore who wishes to take over the world and prevent anyone from coming in contact with anything remotely hazardous
Gumball and his family escape their restraints and infiltrate Darwin's headquarters by taking down the security. When confronted by Gumball, Darwin realizes he's gone too far in his safety crusade as he looks around at his round-the-clock CCTV cameras, and plans to take over the world and force everyone to be "safe." He agrees to abandon his extreme safety measures, acknowledging that life inherently involves some risk.
