Dark Blue, also known as Navy, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside victim) of Season 3 of the AvM Shorts.
He is Purple's abusive father who wanted him to grow up into a fighter, only to leave once his wife disapproved of it. Purple's entire motivation is to find him now that his mother's dead, but no matter how much he tries, he never succeeds.
Appearance[]
Dark Blue is a tall, solid-headed stick figure of the same color as his name.
Biography[]
Dark Blue once met 1 of many Stick Figures called Pink, and together, they had a baby called Purple. Ever since childhood, he wanted his son to grow up into a fighter, and decided to make that true by training him, but he always hit him too hard, causing Pink to intervene. After several years of the same thing happening, during which Purple grew up to be a teenager, he had enough and left. Ever since then, Purple had to take care of Pink until she passed away from unknown reasons. Following this, he tried to find his father to reunite with the only family he has left and make him proud by proving himself to be the tough fighter he wanted him to be, but couldn't do it.
From then on, Purple would take over a computer and rule over a Minecraft village before meeting the Stick Gang. Every time they met, he would antagonize or even try to kill them, either to maintain his rule over the village, get the Dragon Egg, or simply to get revenge. All of those were because he wanted to live up to Dark Blue's expectations as someone tough. Eventually, Purple met King Orange and joined him in his plans of attempted omnicide on all of Minecraft, showing how far he's gone in his quest to prove himself to his father.
Dark Blue makes his debut in "Note Block Universe" as the secondary antagonist. He shows up during Purple's story, explaining to Green his motivations for double-crossing them over and over. He returns as a cameo character in "The King", glitching between himself and King Orange, showing how the king effectively became Purple's surrogate father and the parental figure he never truly had in his life thanks to Dark Blue's abuse of him.
It's unknown what happened to Dark Blue after he left his family, although it's heavily implied he is still alive.
Trivia[]
- Before the release of "Note Block Universe", Alan Becker created a side channel called AlanBeckerTutorials, where there was a tutorial video on stick figure animation with a stick figure that looked incredibly similar to Dark Blue (although wasn't a full copy due to the shade of blue being different), to the point the fandom was even calling them "Dark Blue" before the release of Season 3. It's most likely just a coincidence as said tutorial video was made in 2016, years before Purple's debut, and thus it's unlikely the plot was thought of that far.
- Similar to how King Orange has been called "Mango Tango" by fans to separate him from the Second Coming, who had "Orange" as a popular nickname, Dark Blue has been given several nicknames to separate him from the heroic Blue. Among several minor ones, the popular ones include Navy, Cobalt and Regular Blue; the former two are colors, while the lattermost is a reference to the fact Dark Blue has the "basic" design used by all stick figures that weren't drawn by the Animator.
- While his name was never stated in-series or in an AVG video, members of Alan Becker's private Discord server stated he has been referred to as Dark Blue, Royal Blue, and Navy. Thus, one can assume that all three are canon names.
- It was speculated by fans that Dark Blue is actually King Orange, having changed his color under unknown circumstances. This is because the two are heavily associated in "Note Block Universe", both are taller than Purple (and by extension the entire cast; in fact, they're the same height), and it would explain why Purple is so loyal to King "Orange"; assuming he knows he's his father.
- Ultimately, the Season 3 finale manages to connect the two even more (at one point outright showing King Orange changing into Dark Blue) while also making it clear they aren't the same person. King Orange had his son die in front of him without being shown to have a spouse while Dark Blue abandoned Purple and left him and his wife alone, not to mention that they all have different colors. King Orange and Dark Blue glitching into each other most likely represents how the former essentially became Purple's surrogate father after he was abandoned by the latter, the same way Purple glitching into King Orange's son represented him becoming the king's surrogate son.
- The fact that Pink flinched when Dark Blue raised his hand implies he might have been abusive towards her too, although this is unknown.
- Dark Blue and King Orange are the tallest stick figures in the series. Given that other characters are around the same size or smaller, they are also one of the tallest characters in the entire series.
