It’s just…You know how different I am from my moms. I need to find out who I really am. Where do I come from? And how is my hair the color of buffalo wings? | „ |
~ Daphne telling Velma her plan to find her biological parents. |
Daphne Blake is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Norville) of the HBO Max animated series Velma.
She was voiced by Constance Wu.
Personality[]
On the surface, Daphne seems like someone who has the perfect life, as she is one of the most popular students of Crystal Cove High School, has a boyfriend most girls consider a "heart throb" and is voted as one of the hottest students of the school.
However, unbeknownst to most, she is actually insecure about herself due to not knowing who her birth parents are, despite her loving relationship with her adoptive parents. As a result, Daphne deals drugs called "zoinks" and "jinkies" so she can raise enough money to hire a private investigator and find out who her biological parents are, amongst other forms of petty theft such as stealing wallets.
Daphne was raised to avoid danger by her police officer parents, which she feels is restrictive, and as a result will put herself in dangerous situations just for the thrill of it. She approaches danger with no caution and is overconfident in dire situations. Daphne is also prone to resorting to violence and will happily do so to her friends and weaker students if it gets her what she wants. She also abuses her parents' power as cops, such as revealing confidential information like Velma being the prime suspect in Brenda's murder to the public during Brenda's funeral.
Velma[]
Daphne is first seen in the girls locker room with the other students. She gets into a fight with Krista over sex and nudity in television shows (she opposes it, and Krista is in favor of it) which results in Daphne assaulting her and choking her before sadistically shoving her head on to the floor. Later, a masked figure with a hockey sticks hits Daphne and sends her flying across the room, before asking her opinion on race-blind casting. The figure revealed herself to be Velma. When Daphne criticizes her and says she could have killed her, Velma responds with "guess I didn't try hard enough". Velma then opens her locker, and the corpse of Brenda Bright falls out, with her brain removed, causing her and the other girls to scream and panic.
Later Velma is questioned by two cops, being a prime suspect as Brenda fell out her locker. During questioning, Velma reveals that as children, the two were friends until Daphne abandoned Velma to be with the popular kids. As she is leaving the room, she bumps into Fred. When Fred asks who she is, Velma replies that Fred cheats off her in Spanish (because he thinks she's Mexican). Fred replies by saying that he has a disease where he can't recognize hot people. Velma then asks him if his disease is called "rudeness". Fred, surprised, revealed that his doctor does indeed call it rudeness. Later Daphne runs up to him and tells him that Brenda was murdered, shocking him. She also insists that it was Velma who murdered her. Later, when she hugs him and puts her arms around his waist, he gets embarrassed (due to having a small penis) and shoves her off, before changing the topic to Velma and calling her a "weirdo".[1]
At Brenda's funeral, held at Spooner Malt, Daphne calls Brenda a rare friend, and says that Velma is a piece of crap compared to her. Daphne then abuses her moms' position as cops and access to the case files by revealing that Velma is a prime suspect in her murder. She is called out for this by one of her moms, Linda, but faces no punishment. A frustrated Velma then leaves Spooner Malt before tossing away the restaurant uniform.
Later, Krista is found murdered. Fred is labelled a prime suspect as being responsible for both murders as he has a history of anger issues. When Velma confronts him, he threatens to do "the unthinkable" as he advances closer to her, but before he can, he is shot by Daphne's parents, who are police officers. Fred later revealed that when he said "the unthinkable", he was referring to paying her to keep quiet, like he did to Brenda, because he is "too much of a puss to kill someone". He is then arrested. [2] Fred's parents hire lawyer Aman Dinkley (who is Velma's father) to defend him. Fred threatens Aman with dire consequences if he cannot prove him innocent. To ensure Fred has a clean image, Aman tries to dress Fred up as a child, complete with make-up that resembles a doll, so that people will sympathize with him and see him as non-threatening. However, due to a rainstorm happening the same day, the mascara is ruined in such a way that Fred's face has what appears to be a Hitler mustache, thus having the opposite effect. [3]
The next day at school, Velma asks Daphne to help her get her mom's cold case file due to Daphne's parents being the same officers who worked on her missing persons case. Daphne refuses, and reminds Velma that she wrote insulting graffiti of her due when she abandoned their friendship. When Velma begs her, Daphne says she can have it if she pays her $500. The next day, Daphne reveals that she is The Candyman, the school's famed drug dealer, and she wants Velma's help selling drugs. She tells Velma she will give her Diya's case file if she helps her. Both are caught by Donna and Linda, who chase them down, not recognizing that The Candyman is their own daughter. However Daphne texts them about wanting a cat, which diverts their attention and they drive away. Though Velma failed badly at selling drugs, after escaping the police chase, the two bond and feel as if they are friends again. However Daphne criticizes Velma's poor drug dealing skills and tells her she has to do it "her way". She notices a stranger in a beanie on a park bench and tells Velma to approach him. However, when Velma does, it turns out to be her father, Aman.
At home, Aman reveals that he felt as if he gambled their family's future on Fred's innocence and failed, hence why he wanted to buy drugs - it's a coping mechanism. Velma reveals that Daphne will only give her Diya's file if she helped her sell them. Aman then decides to enlist Velma to help him.
When Fred is back at the mansion, Velma observes how Fred cannot cut his own food and has to ask his butler to do so. She then realizes that there is no way Fred could have killed Brenda and Krista as he is so incompetent that he cannot perform basic tasks by himself. At his trial, Velma repeats her reasoning, and to prove her hypothesis, Velma asks Fred to cut a steak in front of the audience. Before Velma begins her speech, the scene cuts to Daphne watching it and looking horrified, before going back. When Fred demonstrates that he cannot use basic utensils such as a knife and fork, the audience begin laughing at him, which causes him to lose his temper and scream that he is "someone who could be pefectly capable of removing those dumb girls' brains". He is then declared guilty and arrested. However Fred incites a riot at the prison which results in it burning down. Later he is set free due to lack of evidence.[4] After Fred is released, a third girl, Lola, is murdered. As a result, the school decides to host self-defense classes for their female students, which later culminates into a self-defense tournament.
On the day of the tourmanent, Velma confronts Daphne in the bathroom about the kiss, and they both proclaim that they don't like each other. When both Velma and Daphne make it to the finals, Velma reveals that she has access to Daphne's diary and reads out all her insecurities, expecting the school to laugh at her. However the students instead criticize Velma and say mental health is no joke. Daphne then throws Velma into a wall.
At night Daphne visits Velma and when Velma tells Daphne she abandoned her, Daphne says Velma abandoned her first when her mom went missing. Velma counters by saying that it wasn't just Daphne she shut out, it was everyone else. Daphne reveals that their friendship meant a lot to her, but Velma expected her to choose the popular kids over her. After clearing their misunderstands the two become friends again. Velma asks to be more than friends, but Daphne says she'd rather keep things the way they are, though she offers a hug.
Days later, Daphne finally raises enough money for a private investigator and finds her biological parents, who are gang members.
They tell Daphne that Donna and Linda stole her from them, in contrast to their account that Daphne was found abandoned in a field. While initially friendly, her parents then reveal that they only let her find them to use her as insurance in case Donna and Linda find out about their gang activities. Her father threatens to shoot her, but Donna and Linda arrive on a boat and arrest them alongside the other gang members.
After speaking with his father, Norville is told about Operation SCOOBI, an experiment that involved mind control and brainwashing. He tells Daphne, Velma and Fred, and Velma suspects it may be related to her mother's disappearance.
Relationships[]
Fred[]
Daphne is Fred's girlfriend. However it's unknown if Fred actually loves her or is using her for popularity since he cares about his self-image. The latter is likely, as he mentions that Brenda was his plan "if Daphne got too clingy". In the first episode, after Daphne accuses Velma of trying to steal her boyfriend, she says that she can have him as Fred won't take his pants off despite the two dating for a year and is so insecure about himself that he makes everyone leave the bathroom at Spooner Malt when he uses it. Daphne doesn't seem to love him either as she cheated on him with Velma at the end of episode 2.
Velma[]
Daphne and Velma were friends as children until Daphne decided to pursue popularity, which resulted in her abandoning Velma. However, in episode 2, when Daphne and Velma dealt drugs together, they rekindled their friendship. At the end of the episode, Velma has a panic attack and Daphne kisses her to calm her down.[5] In later episodes the two are shown to be good friends, though Velma implies she has unrequited feelings for her.
Her Parents[]
Despite wanting to find her biological parents, Daphne loves her adoptive parents and vice versa. They love her so much that they abandon their jobs just to spend time with her (for example, giving up on finding the Crystal Cove drug dealer despite being close to catching them because Daphne texted them about wanting a cat). However, they can also be smothering and overly protective, such as refusing to let Daphne leave the house due to a serial killer being on the loose.
Differences[]
- Fred is the only character among the original cast who didn't have his race changed in Velma. However, Shaggy was changed to be black, Daphne was changed to be Asian and Velma was changed to be Indian. While her specific ethnicity is not stated, it is possibly Taiwanese, as her voice actress, Constance Wu, is of Taiwanese heritage, and the other characters who were race-swapped have voice actors who match their race.[6]
- Daphne's name is slightly changed in this adaptation. In most adaptations it is Blake. In this one it is a combination of her mothers' (Donna Blay and Linda Ke) names.

Trivia[]
- As revealed in episode 6, Daphne's biological mother's explanation for her red hair was because of her smoking during her pregnancy with her.
- Daphne mentions her parents voted for Jill Stein in the 2016 US Presidential election.
- Daphne seems to have a penchant for knives/stabbing. She stabbed/threaten to stab many other students.
- Daphne names the drugs she deals "zoinks" and "jeepers", which is a reference to older Scooby-Doo cartoons where other characters would say them as catchphrases.
