The Cooker is the main antagonist of the Wallace & Gromit short film A Grand Day Out. It is a gas cooker who patrols the moon's surface and becomes captivated by the idea of skiing ever since Wallace and Gromit's visit to the moon.
Biography[]
When Wallace and Gromit arrive at the moon in their rocket ship and search for a place to set up a picnic, Wallace discovers the Cooker and inserts a 10p coin into the machine. After struggling to get the Cooker to function, Wallace gives up and leaves with Gromit. Shortly after, the Cooker is activated and notices the duo's littered picnic in the distance. After confiscating the duo's belongings, the Cooker reads a magazine about skiing and becomes fascinated by the idea. The Cooker then notices a stalagmite of moon cheese that was previously consumed by Wallace and glues it back in place. The Cooker then notices the duo's rocket ship and heads over. After placing a parking ticket on the rocket, the Cooker spots Wallace eating a piece of cheese from the moon and uses the bat to torture him for that. Gromit notices the Cooker approaching them, but before the Cooker could strike Wallace with its truncheon, it suddenly deactivates. Upon noticing the Cooker behind him, Wallace confiscates its truncheon and inserts another 10p coin before leaving with Gromit to head home.
Upon reactivating, the Cooker initially becomes frustrated when it realizes that its truncheon has been stolen, but upon discovering that the duo are heading back to Earth in their rocket and remembering its dreams of skiing, it follows them. However, Wallace panics and retreats into the rocket when he spots the Cooker rushing towards them, thinking it is acting hostile towards them for stealing the moon's cheese. After failing to climb the ladder, the Cooker breaks into the rocket's base, but accidentally lights the fuse and ends up being repelled from the rocket as it launches, but not before taking two metal strips from the rocket. Afterwards, the Cooker becomes depressed after its failure to get into the rocket and achieve its goals of skiing, but realizes that the strips it ended up taking could be bent, so it decides to turn them into skis and slides across the moon's slopes. Having fulfilled its dreams, it waves goodbye to the duo before resuming.
Though not shown, it is presumed that the Cooker deactivated when its coin meter was used up as it was skiing.
Trivia[]
- Though it is unknown who created the Cooker and why it lives on the moon, the original script involves aliens inhabiting the moon and reveals why the Cooker was there. The whole scene was cut, due to timing issues.
