“ | Yessir, they call him Charles. Half train, half giga-spider from hell! We've been planning his demise for some time now and have nearly everything in order. | „ |
~ Eugene describing Charles to his friend, the Archivist. |
“ | Charles is a bloodthirsty train, and you need to destroy him. | „ |
~ Charles's description. |
Charles is the titular main antagonist of the 2022 open-world horror game Choo-Choo Charles and a minor character in Garten of Banban 4.
He is a monstrous, spider-like creature with the body of a steam locomotive and an appetite for human flesh, terrorizing the island on which the game takes place to the point that some of its inhabitants have started to worship him. The goal of the protagonist is to construct a train strong enough to take down Charles for good.
Personality[]
Being more of a beast than an insidious monster, Charles is highly territorial and considers the entire island to be his hunting ground. His ravenous craving for human flesh causes him to attack anyone that he sets his eyes on, even the cultists that are actively helping him. He is relentless in his assault, though he is still smart enough to retreat if an opponent that can fight back injures him enough.
That is until the monster eggs on the island are threatened, at which point Charles will throw all caution out of the window and become dead-set on killing whoever is trying to destroy them.
Background[]
According to stone tablets the protagonist later found in an early part of the game, Charles is a member of a species of ancient, spider-like demonic predators that terrorized the island of Aranearum and its natives long ago in prehistory until its inhabitants' best warriors fought back and subsequently sealed the creatures away in the island's underground cavern which was also their very own nesting ground. Though most of the surviving creatures died out, from most likely hunger and/or cannibalization, the species nonetheless survived by their dormant eggs. Some time before the events of the game, a wealthy man by the name of Warren Charles III – owner of the Charles Mining Company – arrived at the island of Aranearum along with his team of miners. There, Warren conducted his mining operation, which he strangely kept secret from anybody in the mainland. The first week of the mining operation started smoothly, yet the cost and manpower needed to sustain the operation grew considerably as time went on. Around this time, Warren had also taken an interest to the ancient ruins that were uncovered by the miners, and around this time, had also discovered the ancient temple and its prism. During the weeks that followed, the miners were able to observe signs of a gold vein present nearby, yet unbeknownst to these workers, gold wasn't the only thing they were about to discover. Along with Eugene – who was the team supervisor at the time – the miners broke through a large cavern. From within, it housed large and mysterious luminescent eggs that are as hard as diamonds.
Eugene reported this incident to Warren, who had likely then ordered the team to extract the eggs. Although what follows afterwards is unclear, it can be inferred that the team would come face-to-face with Charles himself, who had either been dormant previously or had hatched from the eggs upon discovery. Charles viciously attacked the miners, resulting in a cave-in that killed off most of the team, and only fortunate survivors like Eugene narrowly escaping with their lives. The incident would be written off as a cave-in accident, with some of the eggs successfully extracted onto the surface. Unfortunately, Charles also managed to escape into the surface as well. At some point, the beast would inhabit one of the mining company's trains like a shell, thus transforming into the train-spider monstrosity that would haunt the island of Aranearum.
It is highly likely that what primarily drove Warren to the island was because of these monster eggs. While it's unknown how he had heard of its existence, the fact that he had knowingly kept the operation a secret makes this plausible. Warren would have also kept his true intentions to the workers hidden, using it as a simple gold mining operation as a front for his actual agenda. Not only were the monster eggs greatly valuable, but were also potential sources of powerful energy. As it turns out, the temple prism can not only destroy these eggs, but it can also harvest and release the life energy it contains. Although what he actually planned for these eggs are unknown, it is clear that Warren realized that he had asked more than what he bargained for once he made a horrifying discovery. During one incident when the eggs were placed in the prism, Charles attacked for the first time. In his assault, the beast would begin to absorb the life energy the eggs were releasing, Charles grew both in size and power. Upon this discovery, Warren ordered his remaining workers to hide the eggs in one of the abandoned mines to ensure that such an event would never occur again.
Choo-Choo Charles[]
The protagonist of the game arrives on the island via row boat, a museum archivist and monster hunter intent on destroying the monstrous train ruling the island. The people living there live in constant fear of being devoured by the beast, usually hiding in places that are difficult for him to reach. The stress has even caused some of them to snap completely, starting a cult in Charles' honor and themselves hunting for any non-believers to sacrifice in a vain hope of appeasing him.
The only way to stand a chance against Charles is to have power, protection and speed on your side, so the protagonist and his partner Eugene got to work in repairing an old train of their own and equip it with guns. Unfortunately, Charles managed to kill Eugene, leaving the player all on their own. As the game progresses, new guns will need to be found, the train reinforced and upgraded while avoiding Charles and his worshipers.
Charles will run off to heal his wounds should the player hurt him enough, but this also makes it difficult to kill him. The goal of the game is not just to build a train strong enough to be Charles' superior, but also steal three monster eggs and bring them to the prism inside the temple at the center of the island. This will anger Charles enough that running away is not an option for either party, culminating in a final battle that will end with either him or the player dead. Unfortunately, Charles absorbs the energy emitted from the prism as it destroys the eggs, empowering and transforming him into Hell Charles.
With his anger having reached a breaking point, Charles devours Warren completely during his rampage before finally setting his sights squarely on the Archivist. Chasing him across the island, the Archivist eventually manages to lure Charles onto the largest bridge on the island, which they had earlier rigged with explosives. The charges explode and Charles plummets to his death, skewered straight through the face on a metal spike below, which avenges the deaths of his victims and ending his murdering spree for good. However, in a post-credits scene, the cavern is revealed holding thousands of monster eggs. One of them starts to move, ready to hatch into another monstrosity at any moment.
Garten of Banban 4[]
Charles appears in the fourth installment of the 2023 horror series Garten of Banban, appearing during one of Stinger Flynn's hallucination sequences. In it, Stinger Flynn, Banban, Opila Bird Nabnab, Captain Fiddles, Zolphius, and the protagonist are stuck in the middle of nowhere after their car crashes, with a distant train whistle playing in the background. The gang try to brush it off as one of the many monsters deep underground, when suddenly Charles attacks, attempting to eat Banban in the process. Stinger Flynn rescues Banban while Nabnab, sensing another spider-like creature, calms Charles down and tries to make peace with him, before being interrupted by the car suddenly exploding.
