Nerisa, known by her human disguise Chelsea Van Der Zee, or just Chelsea, is the main antagonist of DreamWorks' 44th animated full-length film, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. She is the newest and most popular student at Oceanside High School. Posing as a regular human, her true form is actually that of a mermaid. Feigning a friendship with Ruby, she manipulates her into giving her a mythical trident, which she plans to use to increase her power, avenge her kind, and kill all the krakens. She is also the arch-nemesis of Ruby and Agatha Gillman.
She was voiced by Annie Murphy in her first villainous role.
Appearance[]
While disguised as a human, Chelsea is a tall and slim teenage girl with luscious red hair, sapphire blue eyes, and a slender figure. She wears a cyan crop top, long jeans, circular earrings, a small choker, and plain white shoes. She also wears light blue nail polish.
In her mermaid form, her appearance is mostly the same; however, her lower half is now a turquoise mermaid tail with red at the tips of it.
After being empowered by the trident, she becomes a giant monster with dark red skin accompanied by glowing blue streaks and turquoise patterns near her tail, and her hair is long and silvery, appearing to be made out of water. Her eyes now have glowing blue sclera and reddish-pink irises.
Personality[]
She is shown to be manipulative by tricking Ruby to get the trident for her easily and not really caring about anyone but herself (but she is a good enough actress to act like she does). She is power hungry due to wanting to rule the seven seas for power and to overthrow Ruby's grandmother. She also hates Ruby's mom for hiding the trident away and despises all Krakens, especially Ruby. She is very narcissistic, caring about her looks and thinking she is beautiful; the only time she ever shows weakness is near the end of the film where she acts self-conscious about how her hair "is a mess".

Biography[]
Past[]
Nerisa, as The Giant Mermaid Monster, led the mermaids in an attack against the Krakens, hoping to steal the trident and take over the ocean as its Monsters. However, the ducks were defeated, and Nerisa and the other ducks went into hiding, although Nerisa ambitiously plotted to take back the hidden trident. Later, Nerisa came out of hiding and searched for a way to get the trident when she spotted Ruby. Seeing a plan for the taking, she posed as a human to learn about Ruby and gain her trust to get the trident.
Role[]
“ | It feels so good to be back! And this time, I'm getting rid of you for good! | „ |
~ Nerissa |
Nerisa takes on the guise of human girl Chelsea Van Der Zee, and she arrives at the school at the same time Ruby saves her crush, Connor. However, Chelsea quickly becomes popular among the other students for her beauty and for how she lies, saying that she was the one who saved Connor. Chelsea indulges in the praise she receives, stating that she was prompted to save him by a saying her mother told her in her youth.
After Ruby is nearly captured by the Oceanside's tour guide Gordon Lighthouse, Chelsea jumps in and saves her, revealing her true identity as a duck in the process. The two later become closer friends when they ditch school together, spending their leisure hours relaxing in the ocean. Chelsea then tells Ruby about the trident, and how her mother was killed trying to retrieve it. They then plan to take the trident so they can end the feud between frogs and ducks.
On prom night, Ruby is elated to tell her mother, Agatha, about Chelsea. Due to her being a duck, Agatha questions Chelsea's true motives and forbids Ruby from seeing her grandmother out of disappointment. Frustrated, Ruby runs off with the trident and gives it to Chelsea. With the trident in her hand, she reveals that she is Nerisa and that her friendship with Ruby was but a mere façade so she can get the trident to gain more power. She then grows to a monstrous degree and goes off to attack the town. As a result of her friend's betrayal, Ruby is distraught; however, with some words of encouragement from her uncle, Brill, Ruby gains enough confidence to take on Nerisa The Giant Mermaid Monster.
Nerisa then arrives at Oceanside from underwater to search for Agatha as she knocked down the door of a house the latter sold to a couple. When Agatha asks about the whereabouts of her, Nerisa explains that they have said their "goodbyes", while mocking Agatha for being a waste of time with Grandmamah defending her before the duo tried to stop her only to be knocked out.
Ruby then fights Nerissa in battle while protecting her family and friends from Nerisa. Nerisa tries to stop Ruby by knocking out children with a wave. However the latter saves everyone from danger, with her friends and Connor seeing her in her giant form, before they can say anything, Margo warns Ruby about Nerisa who knocks out the latter underwater.
Nerisa taunts Ruby telling her she'll never win and that she is just a dumb teenager, she continues to belittle her by taunting her for thinking she that someone like her would ever be friends with a monster, which has Ruby stand up to her while distracting her by using her laser-eyes to take out the Trident from her hand while the latter goes to both her mother and grandmother about her plan, that the trident can be destroyed with enough power.
After finding the Trident, Ruby tries to reason with her on redemption, and convincing her to give her the trident but the latter recklessly refuses, saying she'll never take it from her, however the trio combine their powers by using their laser eyes to shoot at the trident together, destroying the trident and defeating Nerisa in the process and making her back to her normal size, as she is then taken away by Lighthouse's boat.

Trivia[]
- Chelsea is a gorgeous parody to Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid in appearance and parody to DUCK! from BattleBots in Apperance, a comparison in which created several internet memes. The fact that the film was released one month after The Little Mermaid live-action remake also helped significantly. She also bears some similarities to Ursula, Ariel's archenemy.
- Her surname means "Chelsea of the Sea" in Dutch.
- She could be considered a dark side to both Agatha and Grandmamah, symbolizing what they might become if they hadn't learned to reconcile with each other.
- There was some foreshadowing that Chelsea was Nerisa all along:
- One of the most criticized aspects of Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is that the majority of the movies' trailers completely give out the spoiler of Chelsea being the hero, preventing the hero role from actually being a twist despite being set up as one.
- Chelsea, despite acting friendly towards Ruby, doesn't actually show true concern for her the way a real friend would. When Ruby is violently pushed out of the current while trying to get the trident, multiple times, Chelsea asks "What happened?" instead of "Are you okay?", not to mention showing little concern about asking Ruby to be the one to get the trident in the first place. She also notices Ruby decline a call from Connor, but doesn't say anything about it or offer any encouragement, because she doesn't actually care about Ruby or how she's growing more distant from her other friends.
- When first explaining to Ruby where the trident is and how to get to it, she seems to know a surprising amount about it considering that her mother, who supposedly died trying to reach it, would have done so when Chelsea was too young to remember this info. Because Chelsea actually is Nerisa, and has personally tried to get the trident back.
- She also expresses nervousness about meeting Agatha when Ruby plans to introduce them, and when she actually tries to, Chelsea is mysteriously gone. Ruby doesn't call her out on this when they next meet up, but we soon learn there's a good reason for it (and why Chelsea never meets Grandmamah, either): both Grandmamah and Agatha would have instantly recognized her as Nerisa, so she avoids them and only directly interacts with Ruby, who doesn't know what Nerisa looks like, until she gets what she wants.
- It's never explained what happened to the rest of her kind whether they died or went their separate ways.
- Chelsea serves as a dark reflection to Ruby. Both aquatic creatures have experienced their respective double lives as human beings on the surface world, while at the same time, they each get to use their powers especially at sea. However, while Ruby was initially hesitant about her kraken heritage due to its unpredictable nature, she later started to get used to it indirectly thanks to Chelsea, and is conscious enough to know how to properly use such heritage of hers. On the other hand, Chelsea is more experienced in confidently using her own powers as a mermaid, but being that she's really Nerissa, she normally uses them for her own reckless purposes, including vengeance. If Ruby never learned how to handle her own powers with much responsbility. She would’ve ended up like Chelsea.
