A fake tragic is a villain who either faked their own tragedy or actually presents a tragic past or an alleged Freudian excuse, but cannot qualify as truly tragic as their tragic past does not justify their actions and hence, they cannot be sympathised with.
In some instances, these Villains have been former heroes, given the circumstances of their tragedy leading to them becoming the opposite of good.
Villains in this category include:
- Villains who use "tragedies" that are too petty to be genuine (e.g. the novelization version of Tortoise John, Father, Turbo, Mysterio, Syndrome, Piella Bakewell, Henry Evans, Howard Payne, Morag, the movie version of Tortoise John, Shadow the Hedgehog, Rumpelstiltskin, Eggman Nega, Aiden, Balthazar Bratt, Big Jack Horner, Gallaxhar, King Olly, Peter Griffin, Sideshow Bob, Sheila Broflovski, 2nd Dimension Heinz Doofenshmirtz, Ernesto de la Cruz, Sprout Cloverleaf, Edgar Balthazar, Chip Whistler, Alternate timeline Melvin Sneedly, Jimmy Crystal, Heather, Ushari, Manfred Von Karma, Bradford Buzzard, Princess Morbucks, Tighten, and Powermonger2003).
- Villains who brought their misery onto themselves, while blaming it on someone or everyone else (e.g. Rasputin, Monika, Judge Claude Frollo, Zant, Andrei Strasser, Dr. Weil, Commodus, the Cyberverse version of Starscream, Ursula, the Transformers: Prime version of Starscream, Dr. Phillium Benedict, Lord Shen, Ares, Drex Stinklebaum, Dennis Nedry, Sunset Shimmer, Maleficent, Chick Hicks, Katsuki Bakugo, Zira, and Davey Stone.)
- Villains who felt unloved or unappreciated, but become unsympathetic due to the heinous nature of their actions (e.g. Miles Axlerod, Lucifer, Randall Boggs, Kurt Kunkle, Fire Lord Ozai, Ramsay Bolton, Dawn Bellwether, Lou, Annie Wilkes, Lord Dominator, Grem and Acer, Dave, Dr. Neo Cortex, Vlad Plasmius, SMG3, AI-G Rhythm, Scourge the Hedgehog, the 2019 version of Scar, Titanium Titan, Zurg, Lotso, and Professor Zündapp).
- Villains who experienced genuine tragedies (e.g. losing their family or loved ones, experiencing prejudice, being bullied/abused, abandoned, tortured, rejected by society, forced to live in poverty, having major health issues such as disabilities, etc.) but exaggerate how badly it affected them to make a false excuse for themselves or simply aren't affected by what happened to them (e.g. Drago Bludvist, Kilgrave, Dio Brando, Lord Voldemort, Ego, The annihilator, King, Black Manta, Zoom, Muzan Kibutsuji, Isaac Ray Peram Westcott, Superman, PAL, Montgomery de la Cruz, Esdeath, Creek, Screenslaver, Billy Loomis, Eric Cartman, Mr. Krabs, Orochimaru, Plankton, Shredder, the 1992 version of Jafar, the movie version of Dr. Robotnik, Chloé Bourgeois, Nightmare, and Mojo Jojo).
- Villains who were exposed to toxins or forces which brought out their darkest qualities or were slowly killing them, but instead of searching for help, they used it as an excuse to take up villainy (e.g. the 1994 version of Scar, Lord Commander, The Lady, Light Yagami, Maestro, Jeremiah Valeska, Batman Who Laughs, Norman Osborn, Professor Pericles, Zeus, Fliqpy, Mr. Garrison, and Vlad Plasmius)
- Villains whose excuse sounds good enough, but there's no in-universe way to prove it even happened, at least how they said it did is completely fake (e.g. Adrian Griffin, Frieza, Emperor Belos, most versions of the Joker, Chester V, Captain Qwark, Courtney, Kanker Sisters, Mrs. Lovett, and Governor Ratcliffe).
- Villains who were already cruel and vile people to begin with before experiencing any form of trauma, whether it was genuine or not. As such, their tragedy is prevented from being a legitimate Freudian Excuse in the first place (e.g. Emperor Palpatine, Mary Elnor, Orson Krennic, Armando Salazar, Leo Kasper, King Boo, Chef, Hector Salamanca, Storm King, Chelsea Van Der Zee, Captain Gutt, Mor'du, Magica De Spell, Clavius, Zelda, and Kai the Collector).
- Villains who have a combination of above factors.
Mere speculations/implications of a "tragic" past are not enough to qualify a character for this category (e.g. William Afton, Agatha Trunchbull, Lich, Dr. Facilier, Moff Gideon, Yoshikage Kira, the mainstream version of Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, Hopper, Henry J. Waternoose III, Hades, Tak,and Junko Enoshima); they must have an established backstory which must come from an official and trustworthy source.
