~ Carnage to Venom during their fight. |
Carnage is the secondary antagonist of Sony's Spider-Man Universe, appearing as a mentioned antagonist of Venom, one of the two main antagonists (alongside Carnage) of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and a posthumous antagonist of Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
He is a highly destructive and homicidal symbiote, who bonds with the infamous serial killer named Cletus Kasady, to unleash carnage upon San Francisco. Carnage is the spawn/son and archenemy of Venom. Carnage stands at around 8-9 ft tall, and later while fighting Venom, grows to 15ft tall.
He was voiced by Woody Harrelson, who also played Kasady in the same film and its predecessor, Mickey Knox in Natural Born Killers, Charles Costello in Seven Psychopaths, Harlan DeGroat in Out of the Furnace, Colonel McCullough in War for the Planet of the Apes and Tobias Beckett in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Biography[]
Venom[]
In Venom's mid-credits scene, when Eddie vists Cletus Kasady at the San Quentin Prision for the first time Carnage was mentioned when Kasady said this:
“ | When I get out of here, and I will... there's gonna be carnage. | „ |
~ Cletus Kasady to Eddie Brock. |
Venom: Let There Be Carnage[]
During a visit from Eddie Brock, a dejected Cletus Kasady invited Eddie to meet him one last time to guilt-trip him but instead taunted him. His provoking, however, angered Venom and he assaulted him. Cletus took the opporunity to bite Eddie, only to be surprised when he accidentally ate a piece of the symbiote.
Come execution by lethal injection, Cletus' sample awoke as a sentient new symbiote whom he named Carnage. The two escaped and killed/ate the prison guards and the Warden on the way out. Carnage agreed to help Cletus free Shriek, in exchange for killing his father: Venom. After killing many people, including Dr. Pazzo, the two freed Shriek from her prison and killed the authorities who tried to stop their escape. Shriek used her power during the escape, Carnage threatened to eat her face if she did it again since symbiotes were vulnerable to high sounds which Cletus warned her about for her safety. The three decide to make a “red wedding” for Cletus and Shriek. After kidnapping "witnesses" for the wedding, they planned on killing Venom, Eddie, and the cop who arrested Shriek.
Venom attacked, resulting in Carnage and Cletus fighting them. During the fight, Carnage knocked Shriek around to Cletus's protests and killed the priest to get more power. Eventually, Carnage grew tired of Shriek's presence and tried to strangle her to death, which caused Cletus to panic and try to prevent Carnage from doing so. Carnage tried to force Venom and Eddie to watch Anne die but she was successfully rescued by the heroes. As the fight with Venom reached the bell tower, a still-alive Shriek fell to her death below as her scream dislodged the bell and symbiotes, causing Eddie and Cletus to fall. While Venom saves Eddie, Cletus hits the ground and is seriously injured. Before Carnage could merge with Cletus again, Venom grabs his son with the intention of eating him. Despite trying to put up a fight, Venom was able to wolf it down, ending Carnage once and for all, saying "he did not taste good."
In Other Media[]
Fortnite[]
Carnage appears in Fortnite, in the Venom pack/Symbiotes Set, that could have been obtained by purchasing all of the cosmetics on Page 10, and spending 9 Battle Stars in the Chapter 2: Season 8 Battle Pass. Carnage is part of the Symbiotes Set.
Appearance[]
“ | That is a Red One!!! | „ |
~ Venom to Eddie |
Carnage has a similar appearance to Venom and Riot, as a symbiote by itself it is like a blob of red goo, however when infected a host such as Cletus Kasady, the symbiote stands at around 8-9 feet tall and later in the fight against Venom, around 15ft, has a red and black colour and a fleshy, bloody texture to the suit (as Carnage bonded to Cletus's blood), it typically has 4 blade tipped tentacles on it's back, on it's face is a mouth filled to the brim with knife-like teeth, a long prehensile tongue and 2 white eyes lacking pupils.
Personality[]
“ | Carnage: There you are! Death to you, father! Priest: NOOOO!! Carnage: Not you Father…. (Points to Venom) ...You, Father! |
„ |
~ Carnage showing his murderous hatred towards his father: Venom. |
Much like Riot, Carnage represents the worst side of the Symbiotes - an intensely sadistic and feral psychopath who seems to enjoy watching innocent people suffer, much like his host Cletus Kasady, for hardly any reason at all, as shown when it crashed a driving truck over a bridge simply for fun.
Carnage seems to have a twisted relationship with his host as Carnage acts friendly with Cletus to suit his own goals but can at times be controlling over him. They soon proved to not be a perfect match as the symbiote had no problem in attempting to kill Cletus' girlfriend, Shriek, though Cletus was against it, Carnage still forced him to stay bonded.
Immediately after the symbiote is born, Carnage wreaked havoc on a prison during its escape, destroyed pillars, and killed many guards. In one moment, a guard pleaded to Carnage, which confused it, until it decided to violently murder him when he said he had a family, which showed that he hated the word 'family.' Carnage also has a deep hatred for his father, Venom, wanting to kill him so that he could be the only symbiote on the planet and thus unstoppable. He also uses his allies whenever he thinks it will benefit him and then tries to kill them when they become useless or is agitated by them.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Symbiote Physiology: The symbiote gives its host several superhuman attributes once they bonds with it. This symbiotic relationship increases the host's strength, durability, speed, agility and healing at superhuman levels so long they synch with one another. Due to its cross physiology, Carnage is internally connected to Kasady's bloodstream.
- Shapeshifting/Construct Creation: Being a symbiote, Carnage possesses the ability to change both shape and appearance of his very form as well as fashion part of its very being into weapons and constructs.
- Symbiote Costume: Carnage can emerge from the host's body to form its own that akin to a sentient, malleable but durable suit complete with eyes, claws and a mouth with powerful jaws, sharp teeth and a long prehensile tongue, while increasing in mass it's also has the ability to open holes through it's chest, turning him into powerful opponent. Unlike Venom however who envelopes it's hosts to transform, Carnage rips through the skin and turns the host inside out to transform
- Weapon Creation: Carnage can make weapons out of it's very form such as axes, blades, swords and can even shoot out darts from it's tendrils
- Tentacle manifestation: Carnage has the ability to manifest tentacles and tendrils out of it's bodymass which can be used to grab, impale and smash objects
- Superhuman Strength: Cletus can bolster his physical strength to superhuman level by having Carnage enhancing his muscles. he can lift up a car with only one hand and throw it plus being able to crash a helicopter with it's tentacles
- Superhuman Durability: Due to Carnage's presence inside him, Cletus' bodily tissue becomes substantially harder than normal human, which increased to maximum level by forming red, slimy armor around him. His durability is further increased upon forming his hulking body over his host's making him immune to bullets.
- Superhuman Agility: Carnage's ability to amplify his host's physicality allow him to increase dexterity and mobility to inhuman levels. While manifesting his full body over Cletus, Carnage demonstrated acrobatic and gymnastic capabilities.
- Accelerated Healing Factor: In addition of muscular enhancements and increase of bodily tissue's durability, Carnage's presence in Cletus' body enable him to quickly regenerate from the severe of injuries in mere seconds.
- Telepathy: Carnage has a limited telepathy ability and can only speak to it's host within their heads
- Wall-Crawling: Carnage can climb on walls
- Digital Immersion: Carnage has the ability to hack through computers to find what it wants
- Symbiote Hive Mind According to Venom, all the symbiotes including itself are connected through a hive mind that extends across many universes thus enabling him to experience what the others do and subsequently use the knowledge from the same experience to his advantage. Caarnage can be presumed to have the same ability since he knew the name of it's father despite never meeting before
- Shapeshifting/Construct Creation: Being a symbiote, Carnage possesses the ability to change both shape and appearance of his very form as well as fashion part of its very being into weapons and constructs.
Abilities[]
- Genius-Level Intellect: Carnage has access to the symbiote hivemind which makes him really smart and having a good knowledge over everything despite it being only a day old
- Skilled Tactician: Carnage is a good tactician seeing how he planned the wedding between Cletus and Frances
- Skilled Combatant: Carnage's is a skilled fighter and it becomes enhanced when he uses his tentacles and weapons turning him into a formidable foe that Venom had trouble putting him down his own raw strength and combat prowess alone
Weaknesses[]
- Sonic Vibrations: As powerful as the symbiote is, exposure to extremely loud noise and even that of intense sonic vibrations drives him crazy.
- Intense Heat: Aside from the intense noise causing him to go crazy, Carnage can also be injured through exposure to intense heat, such as from lasers, fire, etc.
- Desynchronization: Carnage and Cletus cannot function at fullest if the duo are not fully synch in mind as expected from those who hosted symbiote in their bodies even with their great compatibility. Due to this, Cletus and Carnage doesn't have true bond, having disagreements and conflicts during the fight against Eddie and Venom.

Trivia[]
- Carnage was originally intended to be the main antagonist of Venom in an early script, but this idea was scrapped with Riot as one of the main antagonists. Regardless, Cletus Kasady appears in the film's post-credits scene and his Carnage persona appeared in the sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
- Carnage is the first known symbiote to be born on Earth.
- It was initially stated that Carnage would be Venom's brother rather than his son, giving the relationship between the two more deep, but the final version has Carnage as Venom's son instead, much like his comic book counterpart.
- Unlike the comics, where Carnage is one with his symbiote in body and will, Cletus and Carnage are two separate minds, though it should be noted that initially Carnage and Cletus were not one and the same, but over time the two became one. In the film, Carnage attempts to kill Shriek because of her sonic scream, angering Cletus. This is a weakness that the symbiote retains for the entirety of the film, whereas in the comics, Carnage eventually evolved an immunity to sound (as well as fire).
- Carnage is referred to by his name only once throughout the film.
- Although Venom devours Carnage at the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Andy Serkis has hinted that Carnage may not be totally dead after all, speculating that perhaps a piece of the Carnage symbiote could have been left at the church.
- In deleted scene, Carnage once had greater ambitions than simply killing Eddie Brock and Venom. Carnage tells Cletus Kasady and Shriek that he wanted to kill all the humans on Earth and repopulate it with symbiote/human hybrids with Carnage as their god, something Shriek wasn't really on board with.
- Carnage's transformation is different to those of Venom & Riot, due to those symbiotes being connected to their host's nervous system the symbiote fluidly encases their hosts, Carnage meanwhile is connected to Cletus's bloodstream and it rips and tears his flesh apart from the inside out to turn into a fleshy-symbiote suit.
- It's also symbolic of the Cletus's symbiotic relationship with Carnage while Venom encases Eddie Brock's body it shows that he cares and inflicts the least pain which makes them a match, Carnage meanwhile has no qualms about tearing Cletus apart, not only that but they don't become symbiotic later in the film due to their differences.
- Carnage's birth is symbolic, while Cletus was in the lethal injection, they inject poison into his blood triggering Carnage to come out, it's symbolic because Carnage is born from Venom, his father when Cletus bit into Eddie's arm making him bleed and Cletus eats the blood/Carnage Carnage's quote "Let. there. be. carnage" is the evil and twisted version of God's quote "Let there be light"
