Blackhand is the secondary antagonist of the 2016 fantasy action film Warcraft.
He is portrayed by Clancy Brown, who also portrayed Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, Surtur in Thor: Ragnarok, Evil Entity in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Mr. Krabs in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, Bloodwolf in The Adventures of Puss in Boots, The Kurgan in Highlander, Viking Lofgren in Bad Boys, Hades in the God of War videogames, Undertow in Disney's The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, Dr. Neo Cortex and Uka Uka in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, Dark Dragon in American Dragon: Jake Long, Savage Opress in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Silas in Transformers Prime, General McGuffin in Wander Over Yonder, General Wade Eiling in The Flash, Gunmar in Trollhunters, Harry Bordon in Cast a Deadly Spell, Parallax in Green Lantern, and Lex Luthor in the DC Animated Universe.
Blackhand begins as Gul'dan's second in command of The Horde. When he discovers Draka, Durotan's wife, gets into labour, he gets angry and confronts Durotan about bringing a pregnant woman into his warband. Once the Orc camp installed, Blackhand leads the raids on several villages of Azeroth. He notices Durotan and the Frostwolves Clan staying away and watching. He goes to ask why they're staying aside. Durotan answers he prefers to fight true enemies and Blackhand retorts they have orders to follow and that Durotan most follow them like every Orc.
Later, he ambushes a group of soldiers with his army. Overpowering them at first easily, he spots Lothar fight. Deciding he is worth a fight, he goes toward him. However, he takes Lothar's gun, unaware of his true utility and a shoot happens accidentally, wiping Blackhand's hand. Shortly after, Medivh, the Guardian of Azeroth uses the Fel against the Orcs and they are in great part exterminated. Blackhand realizes the situation is in favor of the humans and retreats to the camp. The night, he is convoked by Gul'dan who blames him for the deaths of his soldiers Orcs and sentences him to death. Blackhand puts his hand in a green light made up of Fel who gradually disintegrates him but Durotan saves him, cutting off his whole arm.
Some days after, Blackhand is tasked by Gul'dan to prevent Durotan to make an alliance between the Orcs and the humans. He organizes an ambush and succeeds, during which he kills Lothar's son Callan. Back to the camp, Blackhand goes to Durotan's hut, grabs him and accuses him of treason. Durotan tries to argue he was just trying to help Orcs to be what they was before but Blackhand says this time has passed and they are now to the Fel's service. He asks Durotan to be imprisoned and accepts Durotan's request to spare his clan. However, Gul'dan, having failed to make Orgrim the chief of the Frostwolves clan, orders Blackhand to kill the whole clan.
Durotan challenges Gul'dan to a Mak'gora. Blackhand bluntly tells him this is impossible to do because Durotan has no more clan. Orgrim appears and says he is a surviving member. Gul'dan then appears and Blackhand asks if he has to kill them, but Gul'dan prefers to accept Mak'gora. But all does not go as planned and Gul'dan realizes that he is running out of time to open the portal. He asks Blackhand to replace him but the latter firmly replies that he must respect tradition. Gul'dan cheats to win and all the Orcs, Blackhand included, are concerned by this. But when three Orcs decides to revolt, the evil leader kills them without a second thought. He turns Blackhand into a colossal and ruthless beast by rewarding him with pure Fel by surprise, increasing his already titanic strength.
The army of humans arriving to the camp for the war, Blackhand easily kills many soldiers (even pushing some Orcs out of his way). He then sees the king Llyne on the battle. He decides to kill him personally in order to become a hero in the Horde's eyes. But Gamora, Gul'dan's former slave and a ally with the humans, does this before him. When Lothar arrives, he and Blackhand duel which end with Lothar cuts his testicles. Blackhand knees out of pain and Lothar pierce him on the belly, killing him in the name of his son.
Personality[]
Blackhand is a ruthless warlord. He places great value in battle. This is why he is disappointed to not find great resistance in Azeroth, as he said to Durotan during his attacks at villages.
Blackhand obeys Gul'dan without question, even if he disagree with the leader, notably with the Fel's use. Nevertheless, he continues to follow Gul'dan because he believes he can do anything about this and that the Horde is condemned to the Fel, more or less in long term. Blackhand is also vengeful, resenting Lothar for taking his hand killing his son in retribution and even sadistically smiling at Lothar's pain.
Despite his ruthlessness, Blackhand is honorable and respects fondly Orcish traditions. This is shown when he refuses to accept Gul'dan's request to kill Durotan, telling him a Mak'gora can't be interrupted. He was also legitimately upset of Gul'dan's cheating. That being said, this quality fades away when he is powered by Fel, as he loses all care for his fellow Orcs, pushing some out of his way to kill savagely some human knights.
