Beauty Smith is the main antagonist of Jack London's 1906 novel White Fang, and its adaptations. He is a hideous dogfighter who abuses White Fang to make money.
History[]
Beauty Smith was made fun of throughout his childhood, due to his hideous appearance and was called "Pinhead" by his friends. As a result, he was forced to grow in the outskirts of society and worked as a cook in the Klondike.
One day, when he sees Gray Beaver with White Fang, he cheats him on his money with alcohol to buy White Fang. White Fang escapes several times, only to be brought back by Gray Beaver and is now forced to respect his new master, who repeatedly abuses him.
He then pits White Fang into several fights with other dogs, the first one being a mastiff. He then fights more dogs, several wolves and even a lynx. Beauty Smith then takes White Fang to Dawson, where a more powerful challenge awaits him.
Beauty Smith places a bet against a man named Tim Keenan and he brings out a bulldog named Cherokee. White Fang manages to partially wound the bulldog, but Cherokee gains the upper hand and bites into the wolfdog's neck, suffocating him. Beauty Smith comes in and beats up White Fang until a wealthy gold hunter named Weedon Scott breaks up the fight with his friend, Matt and punches Beauty Smith. He manages to prie the dogs apart and orders Beauty Smith to sell the wolf. Beauty Smith refuses, but Weedon threatens him and Smith reluctantly hands out the money. Weedon calls him a beast and Smith swears revenge, but Weedon threatens to run him out of town if he tries to do anything about it.
Eventually, White Fang is healed and falls in love with Weedon. One day, Beauty Smith returns to steal White Fang back with a club and a chain, but White Fang brutally attacks him. Weedon and Matt head out to investigate and pull White Fang off of Smith. They pull him out of the snow and recognize him. Weedon then says that he made a mistake and was presumably arrested.
