Quote

The Balrogs are demons of the ancient world in Middle-earth, and were villains in The Silmarillion. Their leader was Commander Gothmog, who was slain in the book. One in particular, Durin's Bane, escaped into Moria, and is a the tertiary antagonist in The Fellowship of the Ring, and in Peter Jackson's film adaptation of the book.
