~ Azazel |
Azazel is one of the overarching antagonists of the Tekken franchise. He is the creator of the Devil Gene, who bestowed it upon certain individuals that came to serve and worship him as their god. One of these individuals was Kazumi, who in turn would bestow the Devil Gene herself onto her son, Kazuya, leading to the ever-growing conflict within the Mishima bloodline, the main antagonist of Tekken 6,one of the two secondary antagonists(alongside Kazuya) of Tekken 8.
He was voiced by Richard Epcar.

~ Azazel to Kazuya Mishima |
While little is known about Azazel's history, he is known as the ultimate evil that will awaken when "two evil stars" clash in battle. He apparently once ruled over the Earth and was known as the "Rectifier of All Things" but humanity revolted against him and he was imprisoned by them in an ancient Egyptian temple which was for most of history magically locked outside normal space. He created the entity "Devil" and by extension the Devil Gene as means of freeing himself in the future and the Devil would go on to brand humans with this gene for this purpose, knowingly or not.
Despite the efforts of many, Azazel is ultimately awoken as a result of the overflow of negative energy produced by Jin Kazama and Kazuya throwing the world into chaos in order to awaken and destroy him. Once awake, Azazel and his demons face the former Tekken Force leader and rebel leader Lars and Raven in battle which they lose. Azazel then taunts Lars and reveals that he is known as the "Rectifier of All Things", he was created as a result of the sins of mankind, and the time has come for him to destroy humanity so that he can rule, but being too injured to continue the battle, he apparently self-destructed.
However, this is later revealed to have been a ruse in order to gather more strength. After Jin and Lars fought outside the temple, during which Jin fully explained his motives to Lars, Azazel burst out from the ground underneath them, in a golden shell and stronger than ever before. Jin, however, powered up with the Devil Gene approaches Azazel, who fired countless beams of energy at Jin, only for them to be deflected away. Without warning, Jin punched his fist straight through Azazel's chest and the two of them plummet into the abyss below. The outcome of the battle was not shown, however it was later revealed in Tekken 7 that Azazel survived and has since been sealed within Zafina and is attempting to corrupt her from within so as to possess her body.
Appearance[]
Azazel is a massive creature resembling the Egyptian god Set in appearance, has razor-sharp teeth and horns, is roughly twice as tall, and thrice as thick (not including its tail) as an average size Tekken character and is restrained by ice and chains in his tomb. Due to its size, Azazel cannot be thrown but can throw its opponent. Despite this however, Azazel can be juggled. He also seems to have some parts of his body made of beetles, most notably his arms and face, which can be seen when getting up from being knocked on the ground.
Personality[]
Due to his short on-screen appearance despite being one of the main villains, little is known about Azazel's personality. He seems to have a deep hatred for humanity and is very arrogant, assured he will destroy humanity and that no one can stop him, however that is reasonable given the fact that he's immortal. Despite this, he complimented Jin (and Devil Jin in non-canon Scenario Campaign mode) and thanked him for reawakening him, saying he did well as his servant. When Jin told his real reasons for awakening him and wanting to destroy him, Azazel called him a fool and didn't hesitate to kill him, showing he demands undying loyalty from those he considers his servants. He also seems to be very dedicated to his beliefs and twisted goals of destroying everything, even at the cost of his freedom of being sealed back or destroyed.
Abilities[]
Azazel has the ability to summon boulders or rock columns from the ground (which it uses to attack its opponent), summon ice scarabs which it also uses to attack its opponent. Azazel also has the ability to curl up in a ball and attack its opponents. His move set bears some resemblances to previous Tekken boss characters, such as his stun attack (which is almost identical to Jinpachi Mishima's), the ability to fire lasers (similar to Devil, Angel and Devil Jin's laser attacks). Azazel also has a special grapple move in which he picks his opponent up in the air and blasts him with his lasers to the ground. This is one of the few instances where his front body is clearly shown.
- Crystal Blades: Azazel can summon 4 up to 5 blades from his left arm.
- Hellfire Blast: He can shoot lasers from his eyes. However it was bigger and dealt more damage than the Devil's.
Trivia[]
- He has a bunch of gargoyle minions who protect his Temple as evident in his boss fight in the Scenario Campaign.
- Bryan Fury is the only character to admire Azazel, in his own way, as he said that they're both monsters who fight to stay alive, although he claimed to Azazel that reasons and motives are just afterthoughts.
- He is also one of the few characters to not be frightened by his appearance when Azazel appears.
- He seems to be based on the Fallen Angel of the same name who was used as a scapegoat to carry humanity's sins. This would explain the reason why Azazel wishes to destroy humanity so they can atone for their sins. However, Tekken Azazel's appearance seems to be based upon the Egyptian God Set and is imprisoned in an ancient Egyptian tomb. Interestingly the lyrics of his theme "Sacred Dark" refers to the Fallen angels known as the Watchers who caused a second angelic rebellion described in the second Book of Enoch and whom were led by Azazel. The Watchers or "Iria we-quadishin" were angels who had the mission to protect humanity from afar; but instead, the Watchers actually make contact with humanity and taught them metallurgy, medicine and magic before eventually mating with human females. Hybrid children, called Niphilim, are born and God ordered his Angels to put an end to the lives of these children. The Watchers rebelled against this to protect their children. In the end, the Watchers are "Chained to the darkest and deepest confines of the Earth until the end of times" which seems to corroborate the potential reason given above for his desire to destroy humanity. Also the lyrics reference how Azazel was imprisoned in a tomb beneath the Earth in ice and chains.
- Some parts of Azazel's backstory also draw similarities on the Abrahamic God within Maltheism, which originated from the Misotheistic concept of some gods in ancient Greece.
- In Tekken Pachislot 4, Duomo di Sirio has extensive libraries on occult subjects including that of devils that look like Jin and Kazuya's, and books on Azazel, which mention that it is the root of all evil. The book on Azazel also has a tattoo that resembles Azazel's skull, Devil Jin's tattoos and Claudio's arm tattoo.
