Anxiety is the main antagonist of Pixar's 28th full-length animated feature film Inside Out 2. She is one of the new emotions and the sixth inside Riley Andersen's mind and wants to protect her from the scary stuff she can't see, she's also Joy's former Arch-Enemy.

She's voiced by Maya Hawke.

Personality[]

Anxiety is depicted as a tense feeling that she must leave behind along with some luggage (this isn't a figure of speech, as she was carrying several suitcases when she encountered the emotions). She wants to create a good first impression, which is why she is so nervous about meeting established feelings like Joy. She plans everything to an extreme. Everything had to go just as she had intended, and any error is viewed as something that would "haunt" her in the future.

She's also known to have her limits; Example is when Riley gets a bit anxious during hockey game, Anxiety become more confident, and causing her to rapidly press the control, similar to having an anxiety attack.

Anxiety is a control freak who, like Joy in the first film, hates being left in the background when it comes to decisions and wants nothing more than to be in charge of Riley's life. She is, however, incredibly pragmatic and willing to discard everything that she believes to be unnecessary and/or dangerous in favor of what she believes to be Riley's best course of action, even if that means "bottling up" her past feelings or completely redefining Riley.

Anxiety is an orange emotion with her spiky hairstyle of the same color and jade green eyes, orange and white-striped long-sleeved shirt, brown pants attached by a black belt with a gold buckle, and brown shoes.

Kelsey Mann, the director of Inside Out 2, revealed that Anxiety's first design was originally going to be more like that of a Godzilla-style kaiju, which increases or decreases in size depending on how anxious Riley is. Ultimately, this design was scrapped.
Another idea contemplated for Anxiety is that she would be a bureaucrat called TIA (which stands for "Transitional Integration Advisor"), who, upon allowing herself to be dominated by anxiety, would transform into a monster, revealing her true form. But it was discarded because it was not convincing to portray an emotion as a monster since no emotion is really bad as such.
The way the other emotions met Anxiety is similar to how Joy met Sadness, since they only noticed her when the console turned orange, Anxiety's color. The same thing happened when Joy met Sadness, where the former only noticed the latter when she made Riley cry when she turned the console blue.
Anxiety is showed to be a heavy packer, since she possess a lot of baggage to unpack now that she had settled on HQ. This can be seen as a reference to her own emotion, since people who possess a lot of negative experiences and disappointments that affect their own behavior and/or interactions with other people are said to "have a lot of baggage".
Anxiety is shown drinking coffee as well as energy drinks which both often contain caffeine. Appropriately, caffeine can trigger anxiety in some people.
Anxiety could be considered a foil to Joy, both are dedicated to make Riley feel a certain behaviour, Joy with making Riley feel happy and Anxiety protecting Riley, when Riley moved to San Francisco, Joy kept Sadness away from Riley in order to keep her happy until both of them ended up outside of headquarters with the core memories, and later on in her journey, Joy realized that Riley needed Sadness and thus let her help Riley. Anxiety on the other hand, when Riley got into her teenage years, she wanted to protect her from the thoughts that could be dangerous, and believed that Riley required more sophisticated emotions, and even going by means telling Joy that Riley doesn't needs her anymore and bottles her up along with Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness, that is until Anxiety saw the chaos of her action and felt remorse. She reconciled with Joy and let her help Riley, other reasons are:
- Both were control freaks that have good intentions, but fail to register criticism due to strong self-assurance.
- Both are fast-talking and tend to be hyperactive.
- They are typically friendly, but can end up smothering any conversations by talking over others.
- Both exiled Emotions that were deemed to be unhelpful to Riley.
- Joy focused on the short-term at the expense of the long, whereas Anxiety disregarded the short-term to dwell on the long; yet their inherent natures work against their goals, if Joy would've let her protectiveness of Riley consume her, continue to forbid Sadness use the controls and only allowed certain emotions to be incorporated in Riley's mind, she would have ended up like Anxiety.
Anxiety is the second female antagonist in a Pixar film to reform at the end after Gabby Gabby in Toy Story 4.
Despite being an antagonist, she wasn't truly evil and only wanted to help the other Emotions, even though what she viewed as "doing what's best for Riley" ultimately harmed Riley.
