Albert "Al" McWhiggin is the owner of the toy store Al's Toy Barn in the Pixar animated movie Toy Story 2. He appears in advertisements for his store dressed in a chicken costume, leading to him being referred to as "The Chicken Man".
He was voiced by Wayne Knight.
History
While searching a yard sale, he discovered Woody the Cowboy doll and attempted to purchase him. After being informed the toy was among the items for sale by mistake (not knowing that Woody was attempting to prevent Wheezy from being sold), Al kicked a skateboard into some of the boxes in their yard, which distracted Andy's mother allowing him to steal the doll.
At his condo, he added Woody to his collection of other dolls and merchandise from Woody's Roundup, a children's TV show from many years ago featuring marionettes. He contacted the Konishi Toy Museum in Tokyo, Japan to inform them he had a complete set, and made arrangements to fly there to close the deal. Later, after discovering a defect in Woody's condition caused by Andy pulling his arm, he called a craftsman to make emergency repairs and restore Woody to pristine condition.
Woody and his Roundup Gang managed to escape from the airport with the help of the other toys, defeating Stinky Pete who agreed with Al's plan, and tried to help him by preventing Woody from escaping Al's house, and from leaving the airport with the other toys.
Al was seen near the end of the film in another commercial, looking very dejected and sobbing as he said his store's slogan. This was the result of arriving in Japan without an intact collection to sell, as all of the toys escaped at the airport with stinky Pete being sent to a little girl named Amy's house.
Al reappeared in Toy Story of Terror! as the winning bidder for Woody at Ron Tompkins's auction in which he offered $2000 for him, to which Ron gladly accepted. However, Ron's plan was stopped by Jessie, preventing Al from claiming him.
Trivia
- Ironically, Wayne Knight had a beard when he voiced Al. He would later go on to play Zurg in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
- Al's last name is never mentioned in the film but is seen on Al's desk and in the credits.
