~ Adam’s villainous breakdown and last words before being fatally stabbed in the back by Niffty. |
Adam is the main antagonist of Season 1 and major antagonist of the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel.
He is the first man ever created who, after death, transformed into an Angel and is now the leader of the Exorcists. He leads the yearly Exterminations where he seeks to kill as many Sinners in Hell as he can for entertainment and to avoid a potential rebellion. He's additionally the ex-husband of Lilith Morningstar, the Queen of Hell.
He is voiced by Alex Brightman, who also voiced Sir Pentious in the same series and Fizzarolli in the spinoff series Helluva Boss.
Appearance[]
Adam is an angel, but as such, he is far more monstrous and intimidating than most traditional likenesses of such beings, even those that appear in the sister-series, Helluva Boss. He has demonic horns, eyes that lack pupils, and sharp teeth, along with luminous wings, a long, flowing white robe, and a halo. It was unknown if his head is a mask similar to Lute, or actually his face, although if it is, he does not remove it while in Heaven as Lute does, until the season finale of Hazbin Hotel, where it was revealed it was a mask. His face might have been construed as handsome, were he not in utter rage at the time.

~ Adam expressing his sadism in slaughtering sinners. |
Adam is rude, condescending, hedonistic, vulgar, and sadistic. Despite his blatantly unholy behavior, he considers himself infallible and righteous in his slaughter of demons, claiming that the sinners themselves are entirely to blame for their own plight. During his meeting with Charlie, he seems to do his best to act as obnoxiously entitled and "macho" as possible on purpose, often to the point of misogyny (which in fact, leads credence to the creation myth at the beginning of the episode), and even admits to being sexually promiscuous. He also goes so far as to admit that the purge is done for his own entertainment. Ironically, Adam's behavior is not very different than the typical demons that appear in the franchise. It is also heavily implied that the annual purges are done not out of any sense of justice or punishment, but to preserve Heaven's authority in any actual uprising.
However, Adam does seem to have an actual friendship with his right-hand, Lute, whom he happily congratulates for her accomplishments, before his death, he looked at Lute and smiled softly, showing that he did indeed have a soft spot for her. He does, however, reject her idea of an immediate surprise attack, as he believes such an assault would expose his larger plan, which demonstrates that he has some level of self-control. He also demonstrates that he is a capable leader and strategist who curved a new extermination without arousing suspicion, showing that he does have some measure of intelligence despite his over-the-top, cocky behavior.
The episode "Welcome to Heaven" also shows that Adam is proven to be disloyal to Sera, foolishly disobeying her one rule (which is to never talk about the Extermination in the presence of Heaven's populace) and is easily fed up with being ordered around by her.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
According to legend (relayed by Charlie), Adam was the first man, created alongside Lilith, the first woman who is also Charlie’s mother. Despite both of them being created to be equal, Adam demanded complete control over his spouse, but she refused and eventually rejected him, fleeing the Garden of Eden. Drawn in by her "fierce independence", Lilith was approached by Lucifer, who saw her as a kindred spirit, and they fell in love. Later, after Eve was created, Lucifer offered her the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, hoping to spread his ideals of free will to humanity at large, an action which, regrettably, caused the spread of evil and the creation of Hell, to which Lucifer and Lilith were exiled to for their actions. It should be noted, of course, that this takes many liberties regarding most versions of the traditional story, and as it is related by Charlie (daughter of both Lucifer and Lilith) it may be subjected to bias.
During one of his purges, he and his right hand Lute deserted Vaggie, a former exorcist, for sparing a demon child until she encountered Charlie Morningstar, which somehow he and Lute grew aware of.
Season One[]
Adam first appears in "Overture", revealed as the leader of the Exorcists, an army of angelic soldiers who conduct an annual purge of Hell. He is first seen with Lute meeting Charlie at the tower, only revealed to be interacting via hologram, and begins messing with her for a while, especially when bragging about his stories of how he had sex with other women. Later on, he callously rejects Charlie's offer of cooperation in her Hotel project, claiming that no matter how repentant sinners are, they themselves are responsible for their situation and are undeserving of a second chance, throughout singing "Hell is Forever". Even worse, he announced at this time that he's changing the schedule of the purges from annual to twice annual, approaching six months as of now.
In the final scene of that episode, he reveals that the true motivation for his actions stems from the death of one of the Exorcists, though it is not clear whether or not his motive is a desire to quell armed resistance, revenge, concern for his subordinates, lashing out in hatred, or a combination of such. Though it is more of the potential of demons and sinners fighting back, he reassures Lute that no demon would be left alive to ensure they wouldn't have the capacity to fight back against the Purge and the Exorcists. He then smashes the camera feed with his eyes and teeth glowing in the dark, marking a sadistic grin.
In "Welcome to Heaven", Adam was seen having a drink with Lute accompanying him. To his dismay, he notices Charlie and Vaggie being toured around Heaven by Emily, already engaged to "take care of them", however, Lute stops him in his tracks and kept him quiet about the Extermination from the public since no one but them is allowed to learn about it, which Adam retorts her for "shushing" him. He is then confronted by Sera regarding the situation and shows disdain for his actions before ordering Adam to keep the situation from worsening.
Adam and Lute would confront Vaggie in her hotel room, taunting her before letting her know that he and Lute are aware of who she really is, reminding her of the day she was cast out from Heaven. Adam later threatens to reveal her true identity as an Exorcist angel to Charlie, offering her a deal of being forced to work under him again and sabotaging the meeting where she is to not take Charlie's side to shut down the Hazbin Hotel. When Vaggie refuses, Adam taunts over how she has killed thousands of people after dating Charlie spitefully so before leaving for court.
During court, Adam starts to mock Charlie's arguments with the hotel continuously in a childish manner before she brings up one of her Patrons, Angel Dust, as evidence, which he was ready to dismiss as "worth being redeemed". When Charlie questions Adam about what it takes to get into Heaven since "he knows so much", he starts to hesitate for a moment until he passes on a note for Vaggie to read; "Act selfless, don't steal, stick it to the man" as an answer of his experience somewhat. Adam then brings forth a vision globe showcasing Angel's progress so far, which he tries arguing that choosing the debauchery of getting drunk is someone not worth getting into Heaven, though Charlie pleads that they continue watching, which Sera allows.
After witnessing Angel's progress, Adam didn't know how to argue when he did everything on his "checklist" and questioned why he wasn't here if he was already on the path to redemption, much to the court finding this questionable and Charlie starting to get suspicious that nobody in the higher-ups knows how a soul gets into Heaven. When Charlie and Emily try to talk sense about the idea of redemption being worth a shot, Adam and Lute argue back the fact that "Hell is Forever" given that Angel is not worth being redeemed and a reminder of said statement, only for Adam to foolishly reveal the Extermination, causing Emily to go against Sera for the horrors of the purge.
As Charlie and Emily deliver a call out on Heaven being a "lie", Adam and Lute would sadistically reveal to Charlie that Vaggie is indeed an Exorcist, much to Charlie's horror that Vaggie was an Exterminator the whole time and never told her. When Sera hypcroitcally concludes there's no evidence of sinners being redeemed despite the proof Charlie had, Adam gleefully boasts on winning the case and taunting Charlie and Vaggie about the upcoming Extermination, threatening to go after the hotel first before sending them back to Hell. When Sera calls him out for his behavior, Adam tries to gleefully state the reaction Charlie and Vaggie made before being forced to apologize in a defeated tone, leaving the courtroom.

Trivia[]
- Following his reveal on Twitter, many who worked on the show, including the creator, Vivziepop, described Adam as one of their favorite characters because of how fun he was to write and watch.
- A joke made by fans about Adam's design and personality is that he is the Angel version of Blitzo from Helluva Boss.
- Adam is snacking on ribs during his conversation with Charlie, an ironic reference to how, in the Biblical story Eve was created from one of his ribs.
- Adam is also the fifth villain in the Vivziepop universe to be an angel, along with Lute, the Exorcists, Sera, and Cletus, Collin, and Keenie from Helluva Boss. However, Cletus, Collin, and Keenie were much less evil than him, Lute and the Exorcists, since they only become villains because of I.M.P interfering with their job on saving sinners from their sins. While Adam, Lute and the Exorcists kill sinners for pleasure.
- It is debated by fans whether Adam ate the fruit like in the Bible. Assuming he did, then he is aware of the difference between Good and Evil, but only assists in whatever side suits him, while if he didn’t, then he was unfairly kicked out of Eden and fails to recognize the impact of his actions.
- It's implied that even Adam doesn’t know what got him into Heaven, which makes sense considering how awful of a person he is.
- Adam is left handed, proven be how he holds his guitar while playing it. This is another irony, as when the story of Genesis was first written, being left handed was seen as the sign of an evil person, "left-handed". being the original meaning of "sinister".
- Adam serves as a representation of toxic masculinity coming from religious men who felt entitled and see women (or in his case, sinners) as inferior and demanded complete control over them as shown when Adam tried to control Lilith which caused her to reject him for his misogyny. However, he was shown to have a good relationship with Lute.
- Despite having a foul mouth and willing to use the word "c*nt" numerous times, he seems to think Lute's order to the other Exorcists to "Rip out Vaggie's c*nt through her ass!" was too obscene.
- Adam shares a surprising number of similarities with Alastor
- They were both humans before becoming the beings they are in the present.
- Both reached a position of power through massacres (Alastor murdering other Overlords and Adam with exterminations)
- Both had a dark past as humans (Alastor as a serial killer and Adam as a toxic man)
- Both are related to a possible solution to overpopulation (Alastor with the Hazbin Hotel and Adam with the exterminations)
- Neither of them really believe in solutions to the problems of infernal overpopulation, they only participate for their own entertainment
- Neither of them believes it is possible to rehabilitate a demon, maintaining that he only lives once and that is the opportunity to make things right. In addition to the fact that both delight in tormenting sinners
- Both enjoy killing demons
- They both have an adept with whom they seem to get along quite well (Alastor with Husk, and Adam with Lute)
- Adam could be said to be Alastor's counterpart in Heaven.
