Got ya, this time, Stepney. You'll make very fine scrap indeed. Buffer 'im, Bert!
~ 'Arry after capturing Stepney in "Stepney Gets Lost"

Harry, accented as 'Arry, and Bert (also known as Iron 'Arry and Iron Bert) are recurring antagonists in Thomas & Friends. They are twin diesel shunters who work at the Sodor Ironworks.

In the model seasons, they, just like all of the other characters, were voiced by the narrator, a role assumed (in the seasons that they appeared in) by the late Michael Angelis in the UK, and Alec Baldwin and Michael Brandon in the US.

In the CGI seasons, both of them were initially voiced by Kerry Shale from the fourteenth to fifteenth season. From the sixteenth season onwards, Bert was voiced by William Hope, while Kerry Shale continued to voice 'Arry.

Personality[]

'Arry and Bert are devious and scheming. They feel superior to steam engines, and being engines who work at the scrapyards, they enjoy having the chance to break up other engines. They also enjoy playing tricks and coming up with schemes to make the steam engines' lives miserable and more difficult.

Despite their prejudices, 'Arry and Bert have cooperated with steam engines on occasions. The steam engines have also come to rescue them when they are in trouble. They also have a soft spot for ducklings and chasing butterflies, and appear to have a more caring side when it comes to hearing about a fellow diesel potentially having to be scrapped.

Biography[]

Season 5[]

"Stepney Gets Lost"[]

'Arry and Bert approach a lonely Stepney, who has mistakenly traveled to the Ironworks. They shunt him into the Smelter's Shed underneath the "Grabber" and leave him there to be scrapped. Fortunately, Stepney is saved by Sir Topham Hatt at the last second.

Season 6[]

"Middle Engine"[]

'Arry and Bert shunt trucks in front of and behind Percy, making him a "middle engine". This leads to Henry mistakenly pushing him onto the coal tipper, which lands Percy in trouble with Sir Topham Hatt. When James brags that he can handle 'Arry and Bert, Sir Topham Hatt sends him to do Percy's work at the Ironworks, only for James to fall victim to the same trick as Percy.

Season 7[]

"Fergus Breaks the Rules"[]

When Fergus arrives at the Ironworks after Diesel tricks him into going there, 'Arry and Bert arrive and give the traction engine such a fright that he runs away.

Season 8[]

"Percy's New Whistle"[]

Whilst delivering trucks to the Ffarquhar Quarry, Percy whistles a greeting to 'Arry and Bert, who laugh at his whistle and claim their horns to be better. Determined to show the diesels that his whistle is just as good as their horns, Percy practices whistling loudly as he puffs through the countryside. Later, he returns to the Quarry, sneaks up on 'Arry and Bert and blows his whistle loudly, which startles the two diesels.

"Thomas to the Rescue"[]

'Arry and Bert break down after taking on the new diesel fuel, which has been contaminated with water. Later, Thomas delivers them clean diesel fuel.

"Halloween"[]

On Halloween, Thomas and Emily are sent to work at the Ironworks and become spooked by their surroundings. This motivates 'Arry and Bert to play a ghostly prank on them to frighten them even more. However, the diesels and Thomas become frightened when they think that Emily is a ghost after a tarp falls onto her. After the four engines race frantically across the island to Tidmouth Sheds, Sir Topham Hatt sends 'Arry and Bert back to the Ironworks to do Thomas and Emily's work as punishment for their prank.

Calling All Engines![]

The summertime is coming to the Island of Sodor, and Sir Topham Hatt announces that an airport is to be built to bring more vacationers than ever. Thomas and Percy are tasked with delivering building supplies to the site of the airpot, only to discover that 'Arry and Bert are on the same job, much to both their and 'Arry and Bert's annoyance. Later, Thomas delays 'Arry and Bert's timber delivery to pay them back for bumping him and Percy and throwing insults at them, only to later discover that their delivery was for the construction of the new Tidmouth Sheds and he has sabotaged the renovation. This leads to a rivalry between the steam and diesel engines, which threatens the summer. However, Thomas eventually manages to put things right by convincing them to put their differences aside, and they all work together to finish the airport.

Season 9[]

"Thomas and the New Engine"[]

'Arry and Bert trick the new engine, Neville, into bumping into his trucks and laugh at him for it. Upon seeing this, Thomas assumes that the diesels and Neville are friends. This causes a rumor regarding Neville being friends with the diesels and horrid to the steam engines to spread. Luckily, though, the rumor is eventually rectified, and Thomas apologizes to Neville after rescuing him from a broken bridge.

Season 11[]

"Thomas and the Stinky Cheese"[]

'Arry, Bert, and Diesel are working with Thomas at the Coaling Plant. Annoyed at this, the diesels remark that steam engines, especially Thomas in particular, are "stinky". However, 'Arry, Bert, and Thomas later get covered in Thomas' delivery of stinky cheese. By the time the two diesels have had a washdown, Sir Topham Hatt assigns them the job of shunting Thomas' new delivery of stinky cheese, much to the diesels' dismay and Thomas' delight.

The Great Discovery[]

'Arry and Bert are gathered at the Quarry with several other diesels upon hearing that Thomas has been found in the days leading up to the reopening of Great Waterton.

Season 12[]

"Don't Go Back"[]

As Thomas and Diesel race each other backwards through the Sodor Slate Quarry, neither of them can see that 'Arry and Bert are behind them resting at the engine shed. As a result, Thomas and Diesel crash into 'Arry and Bert, sending the latter two through the back of the shed. After the Yard Manager scolds him for the trouble that he has caused, Thomas decides to correct his mistakes. After arranging Henry's train and collecting Rocky to get Mavis (whom he also derailed) back on the rails, Thomas brings Rocky over to 'Arry and Bert and they are soon rerailed as well. Thomas then apologizes for knocking them off the rails.

Season 14[]

"Victor Says Yes"[]

'Arry and Bert are at the Sodor Steamworks being fitted with new valves. However, the Steamworks becomes packed with engines, making it hard for Victor to get to everyone, much to 'Arry and Bert's annoyance. Once things are sorted out, Victor promises 'Arry and Bert that they will be fixed straight after Gordon, much to their delight.

Day of the Diesels[]

'Arry and Bert are part of the cavalcade of diesels who take over the Steamworks, which is headed by Diesel 10. After Sir Topham Hatt sorts out the situation, they help with the reconstruction of the Vicarstown Dieselworks, which had burned down while the diesels were raiding the Steamworks.

Season 15[]

"Henry's Happy Coal"[]

'Arry and Bert tease Henry for having to use special coal and call him "Mr. Special Steam". Worried that his passenger, who, unbeknownst to him, is the Railway Coal Inspector, heard the diesels teasing him, Henry decides to take on normal coal instead, which proves to be a mistake, as it makes him feel funny and release black smoke. Almost anywhere Henry goes, 'Arry and Bert follow and continue to tease him. Eventually, the diesels run out of diesel oil and ask Henry for help, to which he agrees.

Season 16[]

"Bust My Buffers!"[]

'Arry and Bert laugh at Gordon when he runs into Diesel's flatbed and damages his buffer beam and is forced to temporarily wear a diesel buffer beam in place of it.

Season 20[]

"Diesel and the Ducklings"[]

Diesel claims that 'Arry and Bert like him for being "rough and tough", to which they respond in kind, despite chasing a butterfly when they say so. Thomas later attempts to blackmail Diesel into being nice with the threat of telling everyone of his secret affection for a group of ducklings. When Diesel breaks this promise, Thomas takes 'Arry and Bert to see the ducklings while Diesel follows them. Although Thomas had intended to embarrass Diesel with this, the two witness 'Arry and Bert also taking a liking to the ducklings and see that they are just as big softies as Diesel when it comes to them.

Season 21[]

"Springtime for Diesel"[]

After Diesel bumps Daisy and breaks her springs in the process, Mavis tells 'Arry and Bert that Den and Dart are having trouble repairing Daisy and say she may have to be scrapped, horrifying them. They tell this to Diesel, who thinks that they are blaming him.

Trivia[]

  • In their first appearance, 'Arry and Bert were depicted as mysterious and murderous. In all of their subsequent appearances, their personalities were toned down to make them more akin to typical bullies.
